The U.A.E is known as one of the most demographically diverse countries in the world. People from across the globe come to this country to work, study or to enjoy a vacation. While most Emiratis do speak English, Urdu, Hindi and Malayalam; as a tourist, it is always good to know a few basic phrases in Arabic to be on the safer side because you might not get lucky always. So here are 10 Arabic phrases/words that can help you out of situations that you might find yourself in as a tourist. Learning these basic phrases and words will only take a few minutes and they are quite easy to memorize. Read on.
1. When you land in Dubai, don’t forget to greet people by saying…
You can use this word generally while greeting a local in Dubai but if you want to specifically say good morning or good evening say ‘Sabah el khair’ or ‘Massa el khair’ respectively. You can also say ‘TaHiat’ which means greetings.
2. If you want to ask a local something, don’t forget to start your sentence by saying…
It is always good to be polite so don’t bluntly start talking about your problems with a local. If you want to grab a locals attention or inquire about something then don’t forget to use ‘excuse me’ before starting a sentence.
3. If you need some help from the Emiratis, ask…
Like I said earlier, don’t directly shoot your questions at a local. They might be busy so always ask beforehand if they can spare a few minutes and help you out with your queries.
4. After a local helps you out say…
Use this word as much as you can, whenever you can. It doesn’t hurt to go that extra mile and be courteous, right? So use this word generously.
5. If you want to ask a local if they can speak in English say…
Most Emiratis do know a few basic words in English so it is always good to ask a local before hand if they know or understand English. Things will become much simpler, don’t you agree?
6. If you are looking for a specific item/product ask…
If you want to know where you can buy a certain item or product use this phrase to ask a Emirati where you can find it. If you are lucky enough, they might tag along with you.
7. When you are confused about how to reach a certain destination kindly ask…
Use this phrase and just add the destination that you wish to go to at the end of this phrase. For example, if you want to know how to reach Burj Khalifa simply say ‘Kaeef yomKanany El Hosool ala Burj Khalifa?’ Don’t forget to add ‘excuse me’ at the beginning of your sentence though, okay?
8. When you are not sure of your surroundings say…
Getting lost in a new country can be very easy. So always remember to keep a track of where you are going or where you are. In case you forget use this phrase to rescue yourself.
9. When you come across amazing Emiratis let them know that it was…
Emiratis are friendly and welcoming in nature. So making friends in Dubai won’t be a difficult task. Once you are done hanging out or chatting with the locals let them know that it was good meeting them. If they like you and your gesture who knows they might show you around Dubai personally. Wouldn’t that be great?
10. When you want to make a purchase ask…
Dubai is a shopping hub. Did you know Dubai has the world’s largest shopping mall? Yes, it is true! It’s called the ‘Dubai mall.’ Perfumes, gold ornaments, Arabic coffee, Pashmina shawls are just some of the things that are a huge hit among tourists. If you go around shopping and come across some items or products that you are interested in purchasing, use the phrase above to know the price of an item.
