Unseen pictures of higher quality of the first moon landing by Apollo 11 were recorded over by NASA due to a shortage of magnetic tapes and a clerical error of astronomical proportions. This major gaffe was revealed by NASA in 2009. They came to this embarrassing conclusion after an intensive and sweeping 3-year search for the tapes which included sifting through files in vast government storage facilities, going to private homes and combing through innumerable documents, logbooks, memos and records.
These tapes contained pictures that were taken by special lunar cameras which were said to be of superior quality. They were not seen by the public and were stored at warehouses. However, in the 80s, NASA was experiencing a major shortage of magnetic tapes, so they started erasing old ones and reusing them, and by a cruel twist of fate, these space walk pictures seem to have been among those recorded over.
Dick Nafzger, a TV specialist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland who helped lead the search team said, “We’re all saddened that they’re not there. I don’t think anyone in the NASA organization did anything wrong. I think it slipped through the cracks, and nobody’s happy about it.” This revelation also provides more fodder for the countless conspiracy theorists who believe this moon landing never actually happened, and that it was all just recorded in a studio in Hollywood. Highly plausible, I mean just look at that cheap gravel!
