Headlines reporting rapes with horrifying details have unfortunately become a common occurrence these days. As disgusting and heartbreaking as they sound, they are the grim reality of our country. The crime is so prevalent that it’s the fourth common crime against women in India.
What’s even more disturbing is the fact that a majority of rape cases go unreported and only a minuscule percentage of women actually get justice. While around 34,651 cases of rape were reported in India last year, around 90 % cases are said to be unreported!
This grim reality is revealed in an info-graphic tweeted by Sareana Kimia, which shows the statistics related to rape that hold true pretty much everywhere in the world.
The info-graphic shows how around 90% of rapes go unreported and only 1/3rd culprits are actually put behind the bar.

These aren’t just random stats but a harsh reality that we need to do something about. Openly talking about rape and sexual assault is definitely a good start in this direction.
