Admit it, things become way more easier if you know a few words in the local language of the country that you are visiting or are about to visit. So if you are planning a trip to Greece anytime soon, here are a few basic phrases that you can remember and use while you explore this European country. It will only take a few minutes to learn some commonly used phrases to have a smooth vacation. You also might get appreciated by the locals for trying and learning their language. 1. When you want to greet someone say…

The more informal way of saying ‘Hi’ would be ‘Yah.’ However, don’t use this word while addressing a group or seniors. Say ‘YAH-soo’ to be more respectful and polite.

Be nice and be courteous. Don’t just bluntly ask something to a local. Use this phrase as an ice breaker and then go ahead with what you want to say, okay?

3. When you make local friends and have a blast with them, say…

The locals of Greece are quite friendly in nature. It doesn’t take them time to make friends and if you too come across a bunch of friendly locals, don’t forget to use this phrase. Or you could just use this phrase in general. Doing so is considered polite. 

4. When you want to know someone’s name, say…

You are going to interact with the locals in Greece, right? Of course, you might come across fun-loving, interesting people while you are in Greece and if you want to keep in touch with them later you’ll have to ask them their name right? 

5. Because being chivalrous is attractive…

You can use this phrase when you want to say ‘please’ or you’re welcome.’ Say this phrase after asking for directions or after inquiring about the price of something. Basically, use this phrase for just about anything. You can also use this phrase to say ‘I beg your pardon?’

6. When want to grab someone’s attention, say…

If you want someone to pass something to you or pay attention to what you are saying don’t forget to use this phrase. You can use this phrase to apologize too. 

7. If you want to know the price of an item, say…

Yes, if you are going to do some shopping in Greece you might as well learn how to ask about the price of a product. It won’t do any harm. It’ll make things much easier for you. Agreed?

8. When you really want to pee badly, say…

Also, if you are having a hard time locating a place just use the phrase ‘Poh-EE-nay’ and point to a specific location in your guidebook or map while asking a local. ‘Poh-EE-nay’ means ‘Where is?’

9. When you want to ask someone if they know English, say…

Just to be on the safer side always remember to ask a local if they understand English. It’ll be much easier to interact with the locals. 

10. After hogging on some delicious cuisines don’t forget to ask for…

No trip to Greece is complete without trying out some local cuisines. After you are done eating and licking your fingers clean, remember to use this phrase when you ask for the bill. 

11. When you loose track of where you are, ask…

It is quite easy to get lost and confused in a new country. If you too loose track of where you are then don’t be afraid to ask a local this question. You might just find your way back to your hotel.
