‘Chai is my drug.’ I used to have about 6-7 cups of tea every day. I needed a cup of chai when I woke up, when I was sad, when I was stressed and well let’s just say I needed my cup of hot tea next to me at all times or I would lose my mind. However, since I learned about the side effects of consuming too much tea I have cut down on its consumption. Now, I just have 3 cups of tea a day which is kind of a big deal for me. And here are 8 reasons why you too should stop consuming tea in excess.

1. Consuming tea in excess leads to dehydration.

You should understand that excess consumption of tea means excess consumption of caffeine. This can reduce the absorption abilities of your tubules which in turn can leave you feeling dehydrated. So you should avoid having more than 3 cups a day.

2. Having tea in excess leads to bloating.

Are you feeling bloated lately? Well if you are, then maybe it is because you are drinking too much tea. I used to feel bloated after having 5 cups of tea and I could never find a logical reason behind it. But now I do. The presence of caffeine leads to dehydration which in turn causes bloating in some people.

3. It causes deficiency of vital nutrients required by our body.

Drinking tea in excess amounts hinders absorption of vital nutrients like calcium and iron by the body. This theory has been backed by research too.

4. Tea can easily become addictive.

Yes, it’s true. You can easily get addicted to tea. How? The presence of caffeine in tea makes it addictive in nature. If you are a regular tea drinker then you must have noticed that you feel lethargic, irritated and weary when you don’t get your daily quota of four to five cups of tea. I don’t know about you but as a former tea addict I can resonate to these feelings. Some people also experience headaches and fatigue.

5. It increases the level of anxiety and restlessness.

Tea does help in boosting the energy levels but heavy intake can take a toll on your mental health. It can make you feel restless and anxious. Heavy consumption also leads to increased heart rate and sleep deprivation. Well, I can vouch for this fact. I used to make myself a cup of tea before going to bed and I always used to end up like a night owl.

6.  Heavy consumption of tea may lead to prostate cancer.

Heavy tea drinkers are at a higher risk of getting prostate cancer as compared to those who don’t. This is the worst side effect of drinking too much tea. Understood?

7. It may lead to cardiovascular problems.

Wondering why? Okay, let me tell you that excessive consumption of caffeine present in tea is not good for the cardiovascular system. Those who have heart ailments or are recovering from cardiovascular disorders should completely avoid having tea.

8. It increases the possibility of a miscarriage during pregnancy.

If you are pregnant then you should completely avoid having tea. The presence of caffeine can harm the development of the fetus which in turn can lead to the possibility of a miscarriage.
