The weather never plays to the tunes of farmers. Irregular rains, drought, hailstorms, even floods, have all tormented Uttarakhand farmers for a long time. But these hardships haven’t stopped them from trying something new.
‘Baranaja’- a farming method that was introduced in the year 1980, through Vijay Jadhari’s Beej Bachao Andolan (‘Save the Seeds’ movement), enables the farmers to grow 12 different kinds of crops at the same time. The crops include grains, lentils, vegetables and even spices.
This concept has brought sustainability to 3.5 million families in Uttarakhand.
