Mayor got the news when he was on a lecture tour in Spain and accidentally logged onto his laptop at the airport.
He has been awarded for the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a sun-like star.

Mayor had been nominated for the Nobel Prize previously too. Speaking to media he said that he was not expecting the award this time and it was a huge honour.
