The number of people suffering from hunger has increased globally, according to the latest report released by the UN on 15th July.
As far as India is concerned, while there has been a decline in undernourishment, the report suggests that the number of obese adults in India increased from 24.1 million in 2012 to 32.8 million in 2016.
This is in line with global trends which show that obesity has increased all over the world. The report attributes this increase to war and climate change.
According to this report, the number of undernourished people in India reduced from 253.9 million in 2004-06 to 194.4 million in 2016-18.
This means that 14.5% of the total Indian population suffered from undernourishment during 2016-18 as compared to 22.2% in 2004-06.
India has been facing severe hunger crisis for a long time now and was ranked 103 out of 119 countries on the latest Global Hunger Index.
India was also one of the top 5 obese nations in the world, according to a report by The Lancet in 2016.
Considering that as many as 19 crore Indians are forced to sleep hungry every night, it still remains to be seen what will be done to deal with hunger and malnutrition in the years to come.
