According to The Indian Express, the President’s Secretariat released a press statement that read:

Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani exhibited the most conspicuous gallantry in personality eliminating two terrorists and assisting in the evacuation of his wounded colleagues and made supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

The two-time Sena Medal winner was once an Ikhwan (a terrorist who surrenders and becomes involved in counter-insurgency operations). 

Last year, Wani was operating with the 34 Rashtriya Rifles on the 23rd of November when they received some information about the presence of 6 heavily armed Hizbul and Lashkar terrorists at Batagund village. 

Wani and his team had been tasked to block the likely escape route of the terrorists. 

The press release spoke about the incident and further informed:

Sensing danger, the terrorists attempted breaching the inner cordon, firing indiscriminately and lobbing grenades. Undeterred by the situation, Wani held ground and eliminated one terrorist in a fierce exchange at close range.

According to The Indian Express, the 38-year-old was closed in on a house with another hiding terrorist. As the latter tried to flee, Wani encountered him in a hand-to-combat situation. 

And despite being wounded, he managed to eliminate the terrorist. However, he succumbed to his injuries later in a hospital. 

He was given a 21-gun salute amidst hundreds of villagers as his body was taken for burial.
