A team of doctors in Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Monday conducted the “rarest” operation on a patient, who is apparently suffering from schizophrenia. They successfully removed more than 600 iron nails from the stomach of the 40-year-old patient, who had swallowed the nails over a period of time. The patient had stopped taking food since the first week of October, reports The Indian Express.
“The patient is from North 24 Parganas district’s Gobardanga. He was suffering from schizophrenia and had swallowed nails and soil regularly over a period of time,” Dr Siddhartha Biswas, who conducted the operation on Monday told PTI.
“We made a 10 cm incision in the abdomen and removed the nails using a magnet. We have also extracted soil,” Biswas said, adding that the surgery lasted about an hour and 45 minutes.
In July, doctors in Kolkata’s SSKM hospital had extracted seven needles from the stomach of a three-and-a-half-year old girl, who had unfortunately died after the surgery, as she developed sepsis.
