Sarfaraz Hussain, a 16-year-old son of a waiter and a student of the RSS-affiliated Sankardev Shishu Niketan, has topped the state board’s Class 10 exam with 590 marks out of 600, reports The Times of India.
The teenager told the newspaper that he was expecting a position in the top 10 in the state after the exam, but topping the exam was “unexpected”.
The results for the High School Leaving Certificate Examination (HSLC) exam were declared on Tuesday.
Assam’s education minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced a reward for the student:

Assam’s education minister Sarma also gave Rs 10 lakhs to the school as an infrastructure grant for upgradation and promised a road to the school that existed only on paper since it was established in 1998.
Sarfaraz’s father, Ajmal Hussain, who sent Hussain to this school because it provided free education, was extremely happy with his son’s achievement.
He told Zee News, “It would have otherwise been difficult to sustain his studies with my meagre income as a waiter in a small restaurant”.
Sankardev Sishu Niketan, located at Betkuchi on the outskirts of Guwahati, has 24 Muslim students. But Hussain is the first Muslim to pass from the school backed by the RSS, said a Hindustan Times report.
Of the 381,585 students, 239,614 passed Class 10 exams. Sarfaraz was one of 44 candidates of Vidya Bharati-affiliated schools in the Top 20.
