The sheer overpopulation of our country means that you’re not guaranteed a job even if you have the prerequisite education. Think about it, India churns out so many lakhs of engineers every year, that we have more engineers than engineering jobs. Long story short, you can boast of a graduation degree, but that alone will not fetch you a job.
But at the same time, we have people like Mone Lal, who face every situation with great determination and come out on top.
Despite holding a B.Tech degree, 25-year-old Mone Lal was unable to find himself a job. But instead of giving up, he began working as a coolie at the Bhatinda Railway Station. Eventually, his story made it to a national daily and the VC of a private college was so impressed that he has offered Mone Lal a job!
Mone Lal finished his B.Tech in Electronics and Communications in 2015 from a private engineering college in Faridkot. Along with completing his studies as a regular student, he also began working as a coolie in 2012 to support his family. In an interview published in the Times of India, he expressed hope to get a job as a railway gangman – a ‘Group D’ job for which the basic qualification is being a Class 10 pass-out.
In his words:
“My father was a peon in irrigation department in Punjab. I have four sisters and two brothers. After completing three years’ diploma in electronics and communications engineering from Malwa polytechnic, Faridkot, I felt the need to support the family and started working as a coolie in 2012 at the age of 21. Meanwhile, I got admission in BTech and I decided to pursue studies and work together.”
“I intend to offer him a job at the institute, in accordance to his capability. He should get a chance to live a decent life as he has shown pluck keeping his head high and working as a porter despite being educated.”
