History hasn’t been kind to women. Until just a few decades years ago, most women in the world were forced to spend their lives confined to their homes, and were not even given some basic rights like the right to vote. Not surprisingly, women’s rights movements demanding equality have been around for centuries. And of course, most of them have met with some stiff resistance from male chauvinists.
Started in the UK in the late 19th and early 20th century, the Suffragette movement advocated women’s right to vote in public elections. The English men didn’t like the idea. And they started using propaganda, where change was presented as a direct attack on the values of the family. Part of that same propaganda are these ridiculous postcards, dated between 1900 and 1914, that warn men about the dangers associated with the Suffragette movement. The postcards seem to suggest that if women are allowed to think for themselves, and are granted the right to vote, that would somehow threaten the place of a man in the society.
