Bunny Chow is the Indian dish that almost no Indian has heard of unless of course, they have travelled to South Africa’s Durban, where people rave about this dish.
Shanal Ramroop, the inventor of the dish, talks fondly about how it actually involves no rabbit at all – only a loaf of bread that is cut in a square, cored out and filled with thick, spicy mutton curry.
Served with rice and carrot salad, Bunny Chow is especially loved by the sugarcane plantation workers for whom the dish can be easily carried. That is also a reason why the dish is a famous street food in Durban.
