Such is the world of sitcoms. Our favourite characters sit around, planning and executing high-larious shenanigans, hardly ever go to actual work and literally never have to worry about real-life problems like rent. Well, guess what. If they did have to worry about rent, some of our most loved characters across pop culture would’ve had a pretty tough time, to say the very least.
Here’s what the apartments these all-time favourite sitcoms would’ve cost today.
1. F.R.I.E.N.D.S
I know, Monica inherited the rent-controlled, spacious purple apartment from her grandma. Which is just as well, because there is no way a struggling chef and her waitress roommate could’ve afforded that kinda two-bedroom one-bathroom space in New York City.
2. The Big Bang Theory
Leonard and Sheldon live in two-bedroom one-bathroom apartment that has a giant living room and an open kitchen. Let’s be real, no PhD students at university could afford that shizz in California without so much as a hiccup, even despite the forever broken elevator.
3. How I Met Your Mother
The famed two-bedroom one-bathroom apartment that Ted Mosby shared with Marshall and Lily is in New York City and while the fact that there were three of them (four at some points) splitting rent, it’s still a little doubtful how they were able to afford it so comfortably on a struggling architect, a kindergarten teacher and a law student’s combined incomes.
4. Seinfeld
Jerry Seinfeld’s chilled out bachelor pad was a one-bedroom mega apartment on a pretty darn busy street in New York City and that stuff ain’t cheap. And you wouldn’t be wrong in thinking this may have been a stretch for a stand-up comedian in the Big Apple.
5. Sex And The City
It has been alleged that Carrie Bradshaw paid a mere $700 a month for her rent-controlled one-bedroom, one-bathroom with a giant walk-in closet apartment in New York City’s Upper East Side. That’s far from unlikely – it’s outright ludicrous. Now Carrie may have been a successful city chick, but we’re wondering if she really was that successful.
6. Will And Grace
Will and Grace at their humongous two-bedroom, two-bathroom place with an ample living room and an outdoor space at Riverside Drive in New York City had to have lived like royals! The lawyer and interior designer were obviously rolling in it to have afforded that fine-ass apartment. Or perhaps it was just all made-up.
7. Gilmore Girls
The Connecticut house where we saw the adorable mother-daughter duo do have their super-fast and witty conversations over the years was actually likely a pretty big buy. This three-bedroom, two-bathroom monster would easily have been anywhere between $400k to $1 million.
8. The Simpsons
The Simpsons’ four-bedroom, three-bathroom Oregon mega home has been estimated to be worth between $150k and $600k. And going by that estimate for a simple family with simple means, this is a pretty big buy.
Shit just got real, didn’t it? Nothing like a big financial reality check to remind your favourite sitcoms have been fooling you with their effortless lives all along. *gives up on life*
