In case you didn’t know, Doordarshan has recently started the rerun of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, popular TV show, Circus. And as per an interview of Doordarshan’s director general Supriya Sahu to Livemint, the channel is planning to bring back a lot of old television shows.
The 80s-90s was the golden age of Indian television and the kids who grew up in that era still swear by the quality of content of those days. Naturally then, the probability of our favourite TV shows coming back is definitely exciting!
Since Circus came back, we have a few suggestions for shows that we would to love to watch on TV again and we hope DD brings them back soon.
Here are 15 shows that would be perfect for reruns:
1. Flop Show
Jaspal Bhatti did a social satire even when the format was not even popular on Indian television. The show just had 10 episodes but has a cult following till this day.
2. Malgudi Days
This series was based on the works of R.K. Narayan. The adventures of Swami and his friends had us hooked, week after week.
3. Shaktimaan
Our very own desi superhero played by Mukesh Khanna was the ultimate hero for every 90s kid.
4. Dekh Bhai Dekh
The Diwan family was a bunch of quirky and unique characters and there has never been a family comedy show as good as this one.
5. Captain Vyom
Milind Soman played Captain Vyom in this sci-fi show. He was trying to capture the bad guys who had escaped from the ‘space prison’. This was our desi Star Trek.
6. Shrimaan Shrimati
Let’s just say Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain is the milder version of this hilarious show.
7. Fauji
Shah Rukh Khan made his debut on television with this show. The character of Lt. Abhimanyu Rai (played by SRK) made him an instant favourite amongst the masses.
8. Karamchand
Pankaj Kapoor played the carrot-eating detective who could solve every possible mystery with a little help from his sidekick assistant, Kitty.
9. Buniyaad
Alok Nath played the patriarch in this drama set during the partition era. It was one of the first family dramas to come on Doordarshan and set the tone for some great shows that followed.
10. Shanti
The story of the Shanti mansion that holds many dark secrets made for a great drama with Mandira Bedi playing the lead protagonist.
11. Wagle Ki Duniya
The daily struggles of a regular working middle-class man, Srinivas Wagle, were just too relatable for all of us. Shah Rukh Khan even had a cameo in this show.
12. Hum Log
Hum Log was Indian television’s first soap and had a huge following back then. The story was of a middle-class family struggling to make ends meet.
13. Swabhimaan
Svetlana finds herself in the middle of an inheritance battle where she has to fight to maintain her self-esteem. This show was way ahead of its times considering we have nothing close to this on Indian TV even today.
14. Indradhanush
This sci-fi show had everything from time travel to human clones and was a treat for geeks back in the day. Also, this show also marked Karan Johar’s first appearance on screen.
15. Sea Hawks
With Milind Soman and R. Madhavan, this show gave us an insight into the functioning of the Indian Navy with a great storyline.
Here’s hoping the golden age comes back!
