When Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker premiered at the Venice Film Festival, it got a standing ovation for 8 straight minutes. Now, sometimes audiences at film festivals can be a little biased. So we decided to see what Twitteratis said about the film.
Crowd at #Venezia76 went absolutely ballistic for #JOKER. Film is dark, sick, twisted. I’m with a crowd of fellow critics right now, running through the streets of Venice just screaming. Hollering. My legs are tired. We’ve been doing this for hours. Joaquin is an Oscar contender

#Joker is a masterpiece. It’s FUCKED UP. This film is sinister and uncomfortable in the best way; I’m actually just shocked it exists… This is a DC film. And it is DARK AND DISTURBING. I am in pure awe and I’m actually delirious. I was not at all expecting that… #Venezia76 pic.twitter.com/tFFVGR2Alh

#joker was just… Just, just WOW. The Academy Award for Best Actor must go to #JoaquinPhoenix pic.twitter.com/hik3bvXgaP

Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in #JokerMovie is nothing short of Oscar-worthy. He fully commits to the role mentally and physically. Todd Phillips delivered a game-changing comic book film, and I cannot wait to see it again. #Joker pic.twitter.com/cnrL9bsdR2

Joker feels like if Scorsese made Taxi Driver as a comic book film. Amazing performance, great score, but I’m not sure it knows what it’s trying to say. Could potentially be dangerous for the wrong person to watch. Some fun twists that make me want to see it again and discuss.

Phoenix evokes a sense of tragic, melancholic beauty in his transformation as the #Joker, going beyond impersonation & disturbingly explodes on screen in an act so flawless in timing & character perception, it’s quite frankly one of the most impressive method acting feats.

#Joker acts entirely on its own without ties to a larger universe but awesome DC Comics references are not completely absent. If this is really a one time thing, that’s fine, but I want more of Joaquin Phoenix in his role with more characters in the same gritty world.

The review embargo for JOKER has been lifted to near unanimous critical acclaim, many deeming it to be the boldest, most ambitious DC film since THE DARK KNIGHT.

I can’t believe they actually f*cking did it. The road to Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar begins. #Joker🃏 pic.twitter.com/ZLbMFqPQFN
I fucking knew that Joaquin Phoenix would hit it out of the park. I knew this movie would be brilliant, and every reaction out of Venice just cements that. So proud, so excited to see the final product and cant wait for this movie to get all the Oscars it deserves. #Joker pic.twitter.com/iEk8DCJdVv

#Joker is a masterpiece that ushers in a new era for comic-book villains on screen. Dark, twisted, and unafraid to tackle heady subjects in a provoking way. This movie won’t be for everyone. There’s a five minute montage where the Joker just asks ppl if they’ve played Danganronpa pic.twitter.com/eWNFcue5zc

#JokerMovie is a brilliant, terrifying character study. Joaquin Phoenix will haunt you with a performance for the ages, letting you see and feel the darkness within #Joker from head to toe. It’s disturbing because it’s supposed to be, leaving you uncomfortable yet fascinated. pic.twitter.com/AQbpoKlcFs

Amazes me that people are just now calling Joaquin Phoenix a great actor! He’s been at the top end of my actor list for years. #Joker

#JOKER will change superhero cinema forever. Sure to be controversial. The film is a literal riot. I just flipped a car with two of the guys from IndieWire. A Guardian reviewer fell down and we all kept running. I stepped on his hand. REALLY impressed with Todd Phillips

I saw #Joker — and it is unlike anything before it. The movie is dark, thrilling, and chilling. An insane masterpiece.

The movie absolutely transcends being a comic book film and acts as a character study which, at times, will make audiences uncomfortable in wild ways. 10/10 pic.twitter.com/2B2mCkzbZy

Damn. If the movie is as good as they say, we need to watch it the moment it releases in theatres.
