Adidas hasn’t exactly been the poster boy for environmentalists in the past, but they seem to be making an effort to change that perception. They partnered with an environmentalism organization called Parley For The Oceans to create sneakers made from trash found in the ocean and illegal discarded fishnets used by poachers.
Oceanic pollution such as plastics and discarded fishnets have an adverse effect on sea life, which is why an organisation called The Sea Shepherds followed a poaching boat for 110 days and retrieved 72 km of illegal gillnets for Adidas to use.
The ocean trash and the gillnets are turned into fibers that can be used in different garments.
However, spinning the trash into fiber is a long and arduous process, which is why Adidas considers it an ‘idealistic prototype’ rather than a commercial venture.
Instead, they’ll be releasing 50 pairs of these nifty little world-protecting shoes in the near future.
Everything about the shoe, from the green net fibers (obviously) to the uppers to the base is said to be made from sustainable material. This is a laudable move on the part of a major company, and I hope other organisations hear their conscience calling soon too!
