Even as speculation continues over whether cricketer S Sreesanth will be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala, the former India player has confirmed that he has agreed to wade into politics.
“I have an invitation from the BJP to contest from either Thripunitura or Ernakulam. My preference is Thripunitura,” he said as per a report by The Hindu.
Sreesanth is scheduled to meet BJP chief Amit Shah when he visits Kerala on Wednesday.
However, Kerala BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan said the state leadership was not aware of the move and that “things will be clear in two days.” A top BJP leader also said someone from BJP’s central leadership must have contacted Sreesanth directly ‘as he is a celebrity’.
After being cleared of 2013 IPL spot fixing charges by a Delhi court in 2015, Sreesanth ventured into acting. He is currently shooting for a Hindi film produced by Pooja Bhatt.
