10 Dynamic Women IAS & IPS Officers Who Inspire Us With Their Dedication & Commitment

Shabdita Pareek

Whenever women have held the position of power, they’ve excelled at it. And even though we have few women in administrative services, they’re indisputably leading by example, inspiring future generations.

Here’s looking at a few women officers who’re inspiring us with their dedication and commitment.

1. Anna Rajam Malhotra

Back in 1951, when Anna Rajam Malhotra appeared for an interview after clearing the civil services examination, the panellists discouraged her from joining the Indian Administrative Services and suggested that she join either Foreign Services or Central Services as they were more suitable for a woman. Not one to back off, Malhotra stood her ground and became India’s 1st IAS officer.

In fact, the first Chief Minister she she worked with, C. Rajgopalachari, didn’t have much faith in her as he believed that a woman wouldn’t be able to handle the law and order situation. She fought the patriarchal outlook which questioned a woman’s ability to manage law. She worked closely with Rajiv Gandhi and played an important role in building India’s first computerised port, Nhavasheva, in Mumbai.
