Neeti Chopra

Right from kindergarten we were told to just pick up a pencil and scrawl. So our fingers got adjusted to holding a pencil and writing. But did you know that there are actually names for the way you hold your pencil whilst scribbling? These grips affect your handwriting, speed and also how long you can write for without getting tired. Take a look!

Dynamic Tripod grip

If you hold your pencil between your thumb and forefinger with the middle finger behind the shaft of the pencil, then you’re holding it in the Dynamic Tripod grip. This kind of grip helps while writing for longer periods of time.

Dynamic Quadrupod grip

If you grip your pencil with both the thumb and the forefinger and middle finger, then you have the Dynamic Quadrupod grip. This kind of grip uses too much pressure whilst writing and hurts if used for extended periods of time.

Lateral Tripod grip

If you find yourself writing with your index finger on top of the pencil and your thumb across the index finger, then you’re using the Lateral Tripod grip. This grip tends to leave the writer fatigued faster than other grips.
