10 Spanish Phrases & Words Every Tourist Travelling To Spain Should Know

If you are planning to travel to, or are already in Spain. These words and/or phrases are quite simple and easy to memorise. These will be your saviour and guide while you are busy exploring Spain. 

1. When you want to greet a local say…

Use this phrase to say ‘Hi’ to the locals. It is the easiest word to pronounce too. Just remember, the ‘H’ is silent. Simple?

2. When you want to start a conversation with a local say…

Use this phrase if you want to start a conversation with a local. Being polite goes a long way and it won’t do you any harm. Use it when talking to a complete stranger. 

Say ‘Cómo estás?’ (KOH-moh eh-STAHS) instead, to strike up a conversation with someone you know. 

3. When you want a local to help you out with anything say…

This is a very important Spanish word that you should learn by heart. Use this word generously if you want to come across as a humble tourist. 

4. After a local helps you out remember to say…

This again, is a very important word that you should and must use as generously as you can. 

5. When you want to grab a local’s attention say…

They might not have the time to listen to you or your problems so make sure you use this word if you want to grab a locals attention. Be as gentle and polite as you can. 

6. When you are at a bar and you want to order yourself a beer say…

Of course, you are going to go to a pub or a cafe to experience the nightlife in Spain. So use this phrase if you want to order yourself a beer. But remember, to say ‘excuse me’ first.

7. If you want a local to give you any recommendations, say…

Asking for recommendations will ensure you get the best dining experience so avoid wasting your money and time on eating the same old thing. Similarly, if you are confused about which tourist attraction to visit, use this phrase to ask a local for suggestions. They’ll know the best. 

8. When you really want to pee, ask…

I am sure you are not thinking of peeing on the streets or near the beach. And there might be times when you’ll be out throughout the day and its natural that you’ll want to use the restroom after eating and drinking so much. Use this phrase if you want to find yourself a washroom for freshening up.
