Every city has a ghostly side to it. So, when we explored Chennai’s locales, here’s what we found about the ghostly experiences in the city. 

1. De Monte Colony


The spirit of De Monte, a Portuguese businessman still haunts this deserted colony. 

De Monte Colony was established by a Portuguese businessman named De Monte. It is believed that De Monte lived an unhappy life because his wife was mentally ill and he lost his son under mysterious circumstances. Now, it is said that his spirit still haunts this colony. People have reportedly seen him walking around in the dark, opening locks and resting on his favourite rocking chair. The locals had appointed a guard but he too could not survive the terror.

2. Broken Bridge, Besant Nagar


Locals claim to hear screams and cries of women who were allegedly raped and murdered here. 

This bridge was originally built to connect fishermen to the sea but now it is deserted since it has become an active base for paranormal happenings. The fishermen claim to hear the screams and cries of women at night, who were allegedly raped and murdered here a few years ago. According to reports, dead bodies have been recovered from this very location on numerous occasions.

3. Besant Avenue Road


Commuters have complained about being slapped and thrown off the road by an invisible entity. 

Besant Avenue Road looks like any other road till the sun is up but it goes paranormal after sunset. It is believed that a violent spirit attacks passersby and commuters by slapping them. It is claimed that he also throws people off the road and laughs at them. Many people, including kids have lodged complaints with the local police about being slapped by an unknown entity.

4. F2 Building, Valmiki Nagar


The spirit of a girl who committed suicide in this house is said to still roam around. 

This abandoned house in Valmiki Nagar is known as one of the most haunted places in Chennai. It is believed that a girl committed suicide in this house. Her spirit continues to live in the house even after her death. People have complained about hearing a girl sobbing from the windows of the house. Those who walk past the house feel heavy and uneasy and the screens of their mobile phones apparently start to flicker. Some people also claim to have spotted the girl opening and the closing the door, early in the morning.

5. Karikattukuppam, ECR


Souls of those who tragically lost their lives in the Tsunami of 2014 still wander this place. 

This locality was one of the worst hit Tsunami zones in 2014 that caused several death. Now, this area is largely deserted. It is believed that this area is now inhabited by unsatisfied souls who lost their lives unexpectedly. People claim to have spotted blood drops on the floor of a temple near by. Chopped body parts have also apparently been found near the temple.

6. Anna Flyover


Commuters have allegedly heard eerie noises and seen ghostly figures on this flyover. 

This flyover in Chennai is known for ghost-sightings and strange noises. It is also a well-known suicide point. People have complained about hearing creepy noises and seeing apparitions after sunset. Paranormal activities also have been reported during the day and at night.

7. Two-Lane East Coast Road


It is believed that the spirit of a young girl who died in a fatal accident haunts this road. 

This two-laned road connecting Chennai and Puducherry is said to be haunted by the spirit of a girl who died in a road accident on this very location. Paranormal occurrences and strange happenings take place on the road during the night. Several commuters have reportedly seen the apparition of a girl while driving through this road at night. Many fatal accidents have also taken place on this road.

8. Madras Christian College


The soul of a boy who apparently committed suicide in the college premises is said to still haunt the campus. 

According to reports, this college campus is haunted by the spirit of a college student who committed suicide after having his heart broken. It is believed that he was in love with a girl but she did not feel the same way for him. Students and locals have reported mysterious happenings like breaking of windows and pushing of utensils.
