Co-hosts New Zealand started its World Cup campaign on a high, beating Sri Lanka in a World Cup encounter for the first time in 23 years. The 98-run victory at Christchurch was the first win for the Kiwis over the Lankans since 1992.
Put into bat first, Corey Anderson’s blitzkrieg innings of 75 in the second power play took New Zealand to a huge total of 331/6.
Sri Lanka, however, looked fazed by the pressure of the huge total and gave in meekly to the Kiwi bowlers. They were all out for 233 and the hosts triumphed by 98 runs to register a memorable win and start the campaign on a high!
