‘I Wanted To Answer With My Racket And I Did’: PV Sindhu On World Championship Victory

Ira Shukla

This is my answer to the people who have asked me questions over and over. I just wanted to answer with my racket and with this win – that’s all.

This is what PV Sindhu said after her historic maiden win at the World Championships on Sunday.

Two-time silver winner Sindhu also said that she was determined to win gold this time and just told herself to focus on her game without worrying much.

I felt really bad after the first World Championships final and last year I was angry, I was sad. I went through all my emotions, asking ‘Sindhu, why can’t you get this one match?’ but today came and I told myself to play my game and not worry – and it worked out.

Sindhu had to lost to Okuhara Olympic gold medal winner Nozomi Okuhara  and Carolina Marin in 2017 and 2018, respectively. This includes one of the hardest fought battles in badminton from last year that went on for 110 minutes.

2018 was a particularly heartbreaking one for Sindhu, who ended at the second spot at Thailand Open and India Open as well.

Overall, she has won 5 medals at the World Championships (2 silver, 2 bronze and 1 gold) which makes her the joint most successful woman at the singles event.

After the game, she said that every time she steps on the court, people expect her to win. However, this time around, she didn’t let pressure get the better of her and the trick worked.

To more such games and to more such historic victories. There is only one PV Sindhu.
