Federer Tears Up After Winning In Basel For 10th Time, Where He Started As A Ballboy

Yesterday, Roger Federer defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), winning the Swiss Indoor title in Basel for the 10th time. The 20 times Grand Slam champions won the tournament without even dropping a set against Peter Gojowczyk, Radu Albot, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Federer, who is arguably the greatest tennis player in all of history was a ballboy in the same court in Basel in 1993.

So given the history associated with the place, it was not surprising to see the great one shed a few tears at the place he was created.

According to Business Insider, he spoke to the home crowd and said: 

I would have never thought to win here 10 times, not even one, so it’s very special. Thank you everyone, hope to see you all next year.

Winning the tournament this weekend also meant that Federer extended his own record in Basel, creating even more distance between himself and Stefan Edberg, who won the Swiss Indoors trophy three times in the 1980s.
