9 Illogical Plot Mistakes From ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’

Note: If you are yet to watch Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, proceed at your own risk.

Now Potterheads, assuming that everyone reading it has watched it, how confused were you by the discrepancies in the story?

CNet

1. Let’s begin with Minerva McGonagall’s age or existence in 1927!

In The Order of The Phoenix, Professor McGonagall reveals that she had been teaching at Hogwarts for 30 some years. Which, if you can count backwards, is sometime in 1956.

Celwalls

Which implies she was born sometime between 1934-35. So how come, she is teaching at Hogwarts in 1927?

Digital Spy

It is also well known that McGonagall was a student at Hogwarts when Dumbledore was a transfiguration teacher.

2. Speaking of which, why is Dumbledore teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts?

Moviefone

It is well documented that before taking over the post of headmaster, Albus Dumbledore was a professor of Transfiguration. So why is he taking Defence Against the Dark Arts classes in this film?

3. Why are Aurors apparating within Hogwarts?

Even our first look at Hogwarts was shambolic as we see Aurors apparating inside school grounds. WTF!

Giphy

For 7 bloody books, we thought only Dumbledore could pull that off. Practically, no one else can apparate inside Hogwarts grounds. Not even Lord Voldemort!

4. How does Dumbledore see the past in the Mirror of Erised?

When Dumbledore looks at the Mirror of Erised, he sees himself and Gellert Grindelwald making a promise never to fight each other.

Bustle

First things first, the mirror doesn’t show the past or your memories for that matter. That’s what a pensieve does.

Tumblr

The mirror shows one’s deepest desire; which for Dumbledore was a happy and healthy family, removed from the tragic death of his sister, Ariana, as mentioned in the books.

5. What the hell is a blood pact?

We already know that about the Unbreakable Vow that Narcissa Malfoy uses to bind Snape to his promise to kill Dumbledore if Draco failed. The blood pact has all the signs and consequences of an Unbreakable Vow but it scars the people involved, sealing their promise in a necklace.

Aminoapps

Given that Grindelwald is the evilest wizard of his time, wouldn’t he have known that the whole thing has a loophole and gone for the Unbreakable Vow instead? Or did the filmmakers just want the entire thing to look fancy?

6. The timing of the blood pact is convoluted AF!

Ariana Dumbledore died by a rogue spell cast in a fight between Albus, Aberforth and Grindelwald in 1899. So if the blood pact was made before that, shouldn’t both of them have dropped dead the moment they started duelling?

Cosmopolitan

And making that pact right after Ariana’s death seems a bit unlikely, don’t you think?

7. How does Aurelius Dumbledore even exist?

Albus Dumbledore was born in 1881 and Credence was born in 1904. To be siblings, both of them would have had to share a father in Percival Dumbledore. The problem is that Percival died in Azkaban in the 1890s.

Quickmeme

So even if Credence could have somehow been his son, he would have to have been conceived in Azkaban. A prison, secured by hundreds of dementors that take away all your happiness and leave you in a state of total despair. It’s weird that Percival managed to have sexual feelings in their presence.

It is also highly unlikely that Percival had a conjugal visit. So WTF!

8. Weren’t Jacob Kowalski’s memories obliviated in the first film?

Hey, I love the actor and the character. And I wanted him back as much as you did. But the reason given to us for him not forgetting anything is sort of weird.

Pottermore

That’s not how charms work. Remember Gilderoy Lockhart? Poor conman had to be admitted to St. Mungo’s for the rest of the 5 books!

9. Accio Niffler? You can’t Accio living beings!

Newt Scamander! WTF. These are the basic rules of charms.

Mondofox

So there we go. J.K Rowling, we love you. But honestly, you seemed to have forgotten the world you yourself created.

The problem is, we remember!
