Parashar Kulkarni, assistant professor in Social Sciences at Yale NUS College in Singapore, has become the first Indian author to win the Commonwealth Short Story Prize.

This annual award is open to Commonwealth citizens aged 18 and, this year, invited almost 4,000 entries. The prize money is 5,000 pound (nearly Rs 5 lakh).

Granta, a literary magazine and publisher in the United Kingdom, has published the story on its website as it is a partner of the Commonwealth Writers, the award’s organisers.
