Across Srinagar, Graffiti Celebrates Slain Militant Burhan Wani

After Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani was killed by security forces there have been rallies in the streets of Kashmir that have resulted in over 30 deaths. But what is also visible throughout Srinagar are the hundreds of drawings celebrating him. 

Since July 8, when the militant was killed in an encounter, graffiti has come up across shutters of closed shops and walls in the city.

A poster by Dukhtaran-e-Millat (Daughters of the Nation) celebrates the militant and is inside the emergency ward of Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar. 

The text on banner reads (translated): “We will always remember you our sweetheart commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani.”
