Heavy rains have lashed the city of Mumbai over the past few days.
According to a report by NDTV, the city received the heaviest rain on 1st July over a 24-hour period in a decade.
And a red alert has been issued by the weather department for Mumbai, warning the residents of more rain over the next few days.
Incessant rains have wreaked havoc on the city with reports suggesting at least 18 people dead in various accidents.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officials, at least 12 people died and 6 others were injured after a compound wall collapsed in the Malad area at around 2AM on 2nd June.
The deceased were people living in slums adjacent to the wall.
After the weather department warned of more rains, Maharashtra government declared a public holiday on 2nd July.
School Education Minister Ashish Shelar confirmed that all schools in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar will remain shut on Tuesday.
People have been advised to stay indoors unless there is an emergency due to a heavy rainfall forecast.
The Indian Navy also deployed its teams to provide assistance in rescue operations.
According to a report by Business Standard, as many as 1,000 people have been shifted to safe places with the help of NDRF, fire brigade, Navy and local volunteers.
Several trains have also been cancelled and local trains are running on limited routes after the flooding of railway tracks. Central Railways with the help of RPF jawans rescued thousands of passengers stranded in the local trains.
As per reports, 52 flights have been cancelled and 54 others diverted because of bad weather. The main runway at the airport was also closed after a SpiceJet plane skid while landing in rain.
As more rain is expected over the next 3 days, BMC has requested the citizens to exercise caution and help each other.
