A Mumbai sessions court on Wednesday, August 5, granted bail to corporate lawyer Janhavi Gadkar in the drunk driving case which had left two people dead and four others injured.

Her bail plea was rejected twice earlier on June 10 and July 24.

In her bail application through her lawyer Mahesh Sabnis, Gadkar had sought relief on the grounds that the investigation was over.

Saying that she will cooperate with the police in the case, Gadkar also mentioned that the police have got various documents like blood report, RTO report, while all the injured victims have been discharged from the hospital.

However, the police opposed her bail application saying that the case is triable by the sessions court and, hence the magistrate’s court cannot grant her bail, India Today reports.

According to Hindustan Times, the prosecution had objected to the bail application stating that she should not be released as it would send a wrong message to the community.

“She started on the right road but later took a U-turn and went to wrong side at a high speed. Due to her act, two persons died and four were seriously injured,” public prosecutor Iqbal Solkar had argued.

He also said that there was a danger she may drink and drive again.

During the early hours of June 10, an Audi driven by Gadkar rammed a taxi, resulting in the death of two persons – Mohammed Abdul Sayyad (55) and Mohammed Salim Sabuwala (50)- including the taxi driver on the Eastern Freeway in Mumbai.
