People in this country love to laugh, but that enthusiasm is only matched by the tendency for getting offended. While self-proclaimed god-man Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh aka Messenger of God has been subject to public scrutiny, actor Kiku Sharda faced the heat for mimicking him.

Well known for playing Palak on Comedy Nights With Kapil, Sharda was arrested by Haryana police on Wednesday morning, on charges of hurting religious sentiments as he mimicked the Dera Saccha Sauda chief on the show on December 27.

He has been been sent to 14-days judicial custody.

Sharda, who has also made fun of a similar personality Radhe Ma on the show, did apologise after Gurmeer Ram Rahim’s supporters protested against him. But the followers still went on to press charges against the performer, as reported by India Today.

Kiku Sharda told Hindustan Times, ” I have a lot of respect for Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singhji. The look [on the show] wasn’t deliberate; it just happened to match [Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s look]. We didn’t plan it as a spoof on him. It’s a coincidence, and it is unfortunate.”
