200 Specially Trained Commandos Are Ready To Take On Suicide Attackers In J&K

In a bid to fight the increasing number of terror attacks on security forces, the J&K police has trained a new batch of 200 special commandos under their Anti-Fidayeen Squad, reports The Times of India

This is for the first time in past 26 years of militancy in J&K that such a batch has been trained to specifically deal with fidayeen attacks.

They will conduct anti-terrorist operations under the brand name Special Operations Group and have undergone vigorous training  under experts and former police officers at Commando Training Centre (CTC) Lethpora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

SSP Mehmood Chaudhary, principal of CTC Lethpora, told TOI that the special commandos are trained to clear buildings occupied by fidayeen (suicide bombers), climb steep mountains and even swim across rivers.

They are also equipped to use scientific and criminal investigations to handle tough situations.

The Centre was set up in 2010 and has trained 2165 commandos so far, reports Kashmir’s leading daily Greater Kashmir.

The Pakistan Army and ISI have been using suicide bombers to increase causalities in the Indian armed forces after the defeat in the 1999 Kargil war, a police officer told TOI.

This year, nine security personnel were martyred in a fidayeen attack on a multi-storey government building on Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
