Google Doodle Celebrates The Birthday Of Legendary Scientist Jagdish Chandra Bose

Google is celebrating the birthday of scientist Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose by commemorating a doodle to him. The doodle shows him in his laboratory with a crescograph, an instrument that was invented by him in the early 20th century to measure growth in plants.

Here are five things you need to know about the legendary scientist who was not just a biologist, but also a botanist,polymath,archaeologist and an writer of science fiction as well.

1. After joining as a professor of physics in University of Calcutta, he was denied funding and other equipment because of his race while he still continued his research.

2. Crescograph, an instrument invented by Jagdish Chandra Bose to measure plant response to various stimuli was a ground-breaking invention in plant physiology. Interestingly, it was because of his peer pressure that he filed a patent for the instrument, otherwise his reluctance to opt for patents was a well-known fact.

3. Bose pioneered in the investigation of radio and microwave optics. He was the first to use a semiconductor junction to detect radio waves and also invented various other microwave components.

4. There is a moon crater named after him. Yes, Bose, a lunar impact crater is located on the far side of the moon. It was named after him to mark his contribution in the field of wireless telecommunication.

5. Bose, is also considered the father of Bengali science fiction. His science fiction, Niruddesher Kahini (1896) explored how cyclone could be dealt with a bottle of hair oil.
