“The bank approached us saying that the customers had complained that even though their cards were with them, transactions had been carried out without their knowledge,” said a senior police officer.

The bank, after a probe, found that the victims had at some point visited the restaurant and paid the bill using their card.

The bank then contacted the cafe and a probe found that all the customers had been attended to by one Mohammad Badrul Islam Barduiya, who had left the job in March without informing anybody.

According to the restaurants spokesperson, “We carried out an internal probe after the bank informed us about the matter. We scanned the CCTV footages and identified the suspect but he had already left the job.”

He further added that a complaint was submitted to the police against the employee on April 15.

The restaurant said that they carry out proper background checks on all its employees and the same was carried out on Barduiya as well.

On April 29, the bank also filed a police complaint.

After investigating the claims, the police lodged an FIR on July 4, the officer said, adding that the accused has fled to his hometown in Assam and a team has been sent to arrest him.
