In a shocking case of a birth gone horribly wrong, a doctor in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district has been accused of decapitating a baby while attempting to deliver it.
Here’s what the doctor did
The baby was being delivered by the doctor when it emerged from the birth canal, legs first. In an attempt to deliver the baby, the doctor reportedly tied a rope to the baby’s leg and attempted to pull it out, reported the Times of India .
However, his attempts to pull out the baby resulting in its head being severed and it remaining stuck in the mother’s body.
The doctor then disposed of the body in a bin and had to conduct a surgery to remove the baby’s head that was still stuck, the report said.
The chief medical superintendent was unable to explain why the doctor had used this unusual method to deliver the baby. As the news of the incident spread, a large number of people gathered outside the hospital to protest against the doctor’s actions.
Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) of Rampur, Dr Shankar Lal Saraswat, has promised an inquiry into the incident.
Late on Tuesday night, the police arrested the doctor and the nurse. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and an act committed to prevent a child being born alive has been registered against the duo.
Such accidental decapitations, while very rare, have been known to take place in the past when a baby’s head is lodged in the birth canal. Two doctors noted that there were very few reported cases globally and they suspect that there may be one such case in every 39 million births.
