Incessant rains on Tuesday night has wreaked havoc in Hyderabad throwing normal life out of gear as water entered low-lying areas creating traffic snarls and forcing people to vacate their houses.

A high alert has also been issued as the water level in the famous Hussain Sagar lake has reached dangerous levels. For the first time, Hyderabad witnessed froth flying out on roads from Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of the city.

Tuesday night’s rains also broke a 16-year record as Hyderabad received 16.7 cm of rains. And its after-effects are felt even today as roads have turned into rivers with people unable to venture out of their homes, reported IANS.

Major residential and commercial suburbs of the city like Kukatpally, Miyapur, Nizampet, Qutbullapur, Moosapet, Begumpet, Alwal and others have been affected greatly. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation(GHMC) reported the highest rainfall ever which led to the breaching of lakes, flooding at Qutubullapur and surrounding areas.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao asked the officials to take necessary steps to evacuate people from low-lying areas if required.

Following the chaos, municipal authorities have come under fire from Hyderabad citizens for the second episode of flooding in parts of the city in just a few weeks. Unable to control the situation, officials have been issuing advisory appealing people to stay indoors when it rains.

To make matters worse, killer potholes in the city have claimed two lives in the last one week, says a News18 report.

Citizens took to social media to share their plight and mocked the city administration over the failing infrastructure:

Meanwhile, the Met department has predicted more rains for Hyderabad due to a disturbance in the Bay of Bengal.
