62,000 Affected Across 8 Districts, 143 Villages Submerged: Assam Floods Cause Major Destruction

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said 145 villages have been submerged under water and 3,435 hectare of crop areas have been damaged, reported India Today

Assam struggled to cope with continued rains for the last three days, leading to a flood situation, which affected close to 8 districts of the northeastern state.

The statistics from PTI further claim that more than 62,000 people have been affected across eight districts, namely, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Barpeta, Chirang, Golaghat, Jorhat and Dibrugarh. 

The ASDMA claimed the Brahmaputra river at Nimatighat in Jorhat, the Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, the Jia Bharali at NT Road Crossing in Sonitpur, the Puthimari at NH Road Crossing in Kamrup and the Beki at Road Bridge in Barpeta are flowing above the danger marks.

Where relief work is underway, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast enhanced rain in the northeastern states including Assam in the next few days, which they believed can worsen the situation.
