This kachori-wala from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh makes 60 lakh a year. That’s a lot of kachoris sold by the way.

‘Mukesh Kachori’, located near Seema cinema is a favourite among locals and the line of customers never seems to end. Mukesh starts selling his kachoris and samosas in the morning and continues making sales throughout the day.

All was good for Mukesh until someone lodged a complaint about him to the sales tax department. A team of tax inspectors soon figured out that the stall was earning somewhere between ₹60 lakh to ₹1 crore annually. Maybe even more.

A notice has been now issued to Mukesh since he had not issued his shop under GST and was not paying any taxes. Mukesh said

I am not aware of all this. I have been running my shop for the past 12 years and no one ever told me that these formalities are needed. We are simple people who sell ‘kachoris’ and ‘samosas’ for a living

A member of the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) who is investigating the case has mentioned that Mukesh himself readily gave all the details of his income and expenditure, including raw material, oil, LPG cylinders.

It is mandatory for anyone making a turnover of over ₹40 lakh or more to get themselves a GST registration. A 5% tax is also applied to prepared food.

The SIB official has revealed that Mukesh will have to get a GST registration and will also have to pay tax for one year.

People on Twitter were just as amazed as we are.
