In a tragic incident, a 20-year-old youth drowned in a canal when he tried to save his dog in east Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar area this evening. The incident happened at around 9:45 PM when Balram, a final year engineering student went out for a walk near his residence with his Labrador Retriever.
According to sources, the dog slipped and fell into a canal, following which Balram jumped into it in order to save his pet despite not knowing how to swim. The dog however resurfaced in a few minutes but Balram was swept away.
After locals raised alarm, police called the fire department to carry out the rescue operation. At around 11:45 PM, his body was traced and taken to the nearby hospital but he was declared brought dead.
His family has, however, alleged foul play and has demanded an investigation. They suspect the incident took place because of some foul play.
“CCTV footage of the incident, if available, will also be checked and all possible angles will be pursued,” a police official told The Times of India.
