With a job that basically takes up your entire day, it’s quite impossible to finish that last chapter of the book that has been lying around for more than a month now, isn’t it? But we think we have a solid reason for you to finish that book right away. Apart from transporting you to another world, educating you, and making you feel better, books have one more great advantage.

Reading books can make you live longer now. Yes, it’s true, if you’re to believe this study.

According to a study conducted by Avni Bavishi, Martin D. Slade, Becca R. Levy, reading books can help you live longer than non-readers.

This research did a study with 3,635 people over the age of 50. They divided the sample into three groups: those who read no books, those who read books up to three and a half hours a week, and those who read books more than three and a half hours. And here’s what the study found:

Compared to non-book readers, book readers had a 23-month survival advantage at the point of 80% survival in the unadjusted model. A survival advantage persisted after adjustment for all, indicating that book readers experienced a 20% reduction in risk of mortality over the 12 years of follow up compared to non-book readers. These findings suggest that the benefits of reading books include a longer life.
