12 Indian Street Side ‘Chaats’ That Will Make You Drool

Chaat: Savoury street side fast food that has been making Indians lick their fingers clean for centuries. And rightly so. Here are a few of India’s most famous and versatile chaat recipes that might just make you drool over your keyboard.

1. Aloo Chaat

This awesome combo of deep- fried potatoes, mixed with chutney and spices is easily the most popular and tasty chaat one can find on the streets of India. It is a versatile dish that is prepared in many different ways in different regions across the country.

2. Bhel Puri

Bhel puri is believed to have originated from the Gujarati cafes and street stalls of Mumbai! This recipe has become famous throughout India and has been modified to suit local tastes wherever it has gone.

3. Sev Puri

Sev puri is essentially made with puri mixed with diced potatoes, onions and topped off with an assortment of chutneys and sev” namkeen . It is seasoned with a hint of lemon and the oh-so-delicious chaat masala !

4. Paani Puri

Paani puri, puchkas, gol gappas… It doesn’t matter what you call them, but this dish is probably the “King of Chaat.” It is present everywhere. From North to South and from East to West, there is probably no place in India where you won’t be able to get your hands on this tasty treat.

5. Bhalla Papdi

This combination of soft bhalla dumplings and papdi becomes even more amazing and delectable when topped off with curd, chaat masala , pomegranate seeds, coriander and lots of masala!

6. Tikki Chaat

Aloo patties stuffed with chana dal and fried to golden brown. Served with green pudina chutney, sweet red chutney, curd and slices of paneer. how can this get any better? Just heavenly.

7. Corn chaat

Here’s one for the health freaks. Sure, you get fancy versions of this chaat in malls and food courts across India. But in the end, street food is street food. Lightly boiled corn is mixed with finely chopped onions, tomatoes and chillies, topped off with sev and served piping hot.

8. Raj Kachori

The Raj Kachori is a chaat from Rajasthan which can only be described as a thermonuclear explosion of flavours. It is crispy from the outside and soft on the inside, composed of soft pakodis, aloo bhujiya, sweet chutney and covered with a liberal helping of curd.

9. Fruit Chaat

Fresh fruits, chaat masala and lemon. Simple. Sumptuous. Sorted.

10. Chana Chaat

What do you get when you take some boiled chick peas, diced potatoes, pomegranate  seeds and toss all of that in some delectable chutney? This plateful of awesomeness.

11. Dahi Puri

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the humble gol gappas in a different ‘avataar.’ Only here, the puri are filled with potatoes, channa, onions and curd. Does this make it even tastier? The answer is an emphatic “YES!”

12. Samosa Chaat

Samosas aren’t just meant to be eaten with chutney you know.  The dryness of the samosa can be offset with the warmth and savoryness of  a nice chick pea curry, with coriander and onions used for garnishing. Tastegasm.
