Friendship bands always bring back fond memories. Every first Sunday of August, we would meet our friends and have our arms covered from wrist to elbow in those colourful bands. But did you know where it all began? Do you know the significance of each colour of friendship bands?

1. Friendship bands actually came into being in 4th century BC.
Knot tying arts are a part of Chinese history. The designs of bands today are very similar to the ones used between 420 to 220 BC.
2. It also influenced a form of textile making in the middle east called Macrame.
Instead of the conventional weaving technique, Macrame employs the knot pattern to make textiles. This started in Arabia circa 13th century.
3. Sailors relied on these knots for their journeys to the sea.
No sailor is a sailor if he can’t tie knots. There are different kinds of knots of course, the half knot, the square knot and the half hitch knot. But the basic idea behind knot tying is the same.
