10 Fictional Friendships That Redefined The Meaning Of ‘Dosti’

Suparn Pandey

I could start off with a quote on friendship, but that would be way too corny. So I’ll just say it straight. We’d be nothing without our friends. A world without friends would probably lose meaning. So, with Friendship Day around the corner, we decided to compile a list of the greatest fictional friendships; ones that may have inspired countless real life friendships around the world.

1. Calvin and Hobbes

Calvin: “True friends are hard to come by…”

Bringing a twist to the concept of “BFF”, Bill Waterson introduced us to the adorable friendship between Calvin and his imaginary pet tiger, Hobbes. The duo stole millions of readers’ hearts with their silly antics and surprisingly profound observations on life and the nature of people.

2. Bruce Wayne and Alfred

Alfred: “Know your limits, Master Wayne.”

Now here’s a complicated yet deep friendship if ever there was one. Alfred is Batman’s rock. He is someone the Dark Knight just cannot function without. He’s a father figure, a medic, a partner in crime (fighting) and of course, a witty and honest friend. And Alfred on his part, dotes on Bruce Wayne, who he practically raised himself.

3. Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley

Harry: “Ron, what are you doing here?”

Ron: “Rescuing you, of course!”

This is friendship at its purest. It was amazing to see these two young boys grow up together and bond with each other. Sure, they had to see a lot of bad times and their friendship went through its highs and lows. But we knew from the time when Harry met Ron in the Hogwarts Express for the first time, this friendship would be forever.

4. Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee

Frodo: “I’m glad to be with you, Samwise Gamgee, here at the end of all things.”

Hobbits may be tiny, but when it comes to being courageous and loyalty towards friends, here’s nothing that can top them. Sam followed Frodo from the Shire all the way to the very edge of Mount Doom. Frodo said it himself, “Frodo wouldn’t have gotten far without Sam.”

5. Chandler Bing and Joey Tribbiani

Both of them together: “Men are here!”

What happens when two of the biggest goofs in the world become fast friends? Continuous. Comedic. Brilliance. That’s what. They were looked up to for the happy camaraderie they shared. Polar opposites in nearly all respects, the two always seem to enjoy themselves best when they’re together, be it binging on Baywatch or on pizzas.

6. Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper

Veronica: “Betty, do you think short skirts make girls look taller?”

Betty: “No. But they make boys look longer.”

A classic example of the crazy yet adorable dynamics between girl BFFs, these 2 are rivals for Archie’s affections, but that hardly affects their friendship. Fundamentally different characters, they taught teens all over the world how girl power really swings in pairs.

7. Captain Kirk and Spock

Spock: “I have been and always shall be your friend.”

The two started out as arch rivals and went on to become the greatest of friends. These two always looked out for each other, even risking the Enterprise to keep each other safe. This makes it even harder to not well up when Spock sacrifices himself for the ship.

8. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson

Sherlock: “Elementary, my dear Watson.”

Be it in the original series, or in its consequent adaptations in recent years, you cannot have Sherlock Holmes without Dr. Watson at his back. One might argue that Holmes didn’t need Watson’s assistance, but it would take a stretch of imagination to imagine one without the other.

9. R2D2 and C-3PO

C-3PO: “Master Luke, Sir, it’s so good to see you fully functional again. R2 expresses his relief also.”

This pair is unique on the list because they’re not what you call, um, human. But this dynamic duo of robots survived two galactic wars, Tattoine (twice) as well as garbage monsters. Just thinking of R2’s sad little whine when C-3P0 gets dismembered makes our hearts ache.

10. Scooby Doo and Shaggy Rogers

Shaggy to Scooby: “A chocolate pizza would really help right now. Let’s go get one.”

A pleasure exclusively for the Cartoon Network generation, this duo is in all likelihood the unlikeliest pair of ghost-busters you could ever see. They outmatch each other at running to save their skins, and of course, eating large amounts of food. Loveable and iconic, this pair remains the best example of the bromance between a guy and his dog.
