Thank You ‘English Vinglish’ For Bringing The Wedding Folk Song ‘Navrai Majhi’ Into Our Lives

Srishti Magan

In 2012, Gauri Shinde gifted us with a beautiful, slice of life drama, English Vinglish. From the emotional and relatable story to the powerful performances, the audience loved everything about this movie, and rightfully so.

However, one more thing that English Vinglish deserves credit for, is introducing or rather reminding, the public at large about the Marathi folk song Navrai Majhi.

In the movie, the song plays during Shashi’s (Sridevi) niece’s wedding. It’s the ‘dance number’ that friends and family come together and bust a move on. But, unlike the wedding dance numbers that Hindi movies usually present, this is not a loud, feet-thumping song. Rather, it’s a track that you gently sway to, choreograph dance steps on, and actually celebrate the joy of weddings.

With a mix of Hindi and Marathi, the simple lyrics literally translate to a celebration of the bride. It’s a folk song, traditionally sung by the bride’s family, to introduce her as a vision of grace and beauty. And let’s face it, which bride wouldn’t want that kind of an introduction?

The song is also an invite to the wedding party to partake in the celebrations, while also serving as a reminder of the bride’s dreams and hopes.

Aankhon mein iske ishaare
Bade nakhrile nakhrile nakhrile
Sapnon ke laakhon nazaare
Saare rangeele rangeele rangeele

It’s relevance to the wedding ceremony, the gentle beats, and the soft music made it a favourite for bridesmaids and even the brides’ mother to perform on – and most of us had no idea about this joyful number before English Vinglish introduced us to it.

Away from autotunes and loud beats, Navrai Majhi truly remains the perfect track to dance and build beautiful memories on and no Indian wedding is complete without it.
