Dear Ricky Martin, ‘90s Kids Are Still Livin’ La Vida Loca To Your Beats

Sampada Sharma

There’s no denying that the ’90s were indeed a magical time.

It’s that one ear that we can never, ever get over. It’s the era we love revisiting through our tinted, nostalgic glasses. The one we miss all the time for its sheer simplicity, its culture, its movies and most importantly, its music.

The world might have become a simpler place, but the innocence of the ’90s is exactly what we’re missing now!

Speaking of innocence, it was also in the ’90s when Indian kids were first introduced to MTV.

Back then, the channel actually played music and as Indians, it was our first major window to international artists from across the world.

It was then that we first saw Ricky Martin.

He danced into our hearts with Livin’ La Vida Loca and before we knew, the song became our anthem!

I had no interest in sports but the only reason I cared about FIFA in 1998 was The Cup Of Life

Unlike the millennials, we didn’t have the option of watching music videos at our will so hours were spent glued in front of those television sets to catch a glimpse of Ricky.

But no complaints there for every second spent watching his moves was more than worth all the waiting!

His presence on the screen would light up my tiny eyes.

For here was a man who could fill the room with his mad energy. This was the music that you couldn’t just tap to, you HAD to dance.

His charismatic personality, the twinkle in his eye and his crazy dance moves, it was impossible to not fall in love with him.

He was a sex symbol back when I didn’t even know the phrase existed.

There was even a phase where he was rumoured to be dating Sushmita Sen!

I was jealous but that didn’t last long because then, he visited DELHI.

The world couldn’t be a better place after that!

Ricky Martin introduced us to music we probably couldn’t sing along but loved anyway! Music knows no language and Ricky Martin was the one who made us believe in that.

How else can you explain the crazy fan base the artist still has? Safe to say, much of that fan base comprises of kids who grew up in the ’90s!
