Karan Johar Takes A Dig At His Debut Film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, Says “There Was No Logic”

Following the 21st anniversary of his directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota hai, filmmaker Karan Johar pointed out the movies’ mistakes and loopholes.

The romantic drama, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji, was released back in 1998 and is a blockbuster of all time. But despite the film’s success and popularity, Karan raised issues in his own debut.

In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Karan calls out Rahul’s character and says that he’s a deeply confused guy who doesn’t know what he wants. He also says that Rahul doesn’t do much in the whole movie.

Whatever happened to him was because there were people pushing him – his dead wife’s spirit, his eight-year-old daughter, and Anjali herself. What made him endearing was his charm, his large heart and Shah Rukh’s personal charisma.

And not just us but Karan himself pointed out the loopholes in his debut movie and says there was no logic or backstory of the characters.

You don’t know what Shah Rukh, or anyone else, does for a living in the movie. And the eight letters – one for each birthday – made no sense, either.

While talking about the scene in which Rahul taunts Anjali before her wedding, Karan claims that that’s not how he had written the scene. He says:

In my original draft, Anjali tears into Rahul and calls him out. She says he doesn’t know how to stand up for himself. I threw out the scene because I thought it would cause a disservice to my leading man.

He says if he would have written the storyline in today’s date, he would keep that scene in the movie.

Today, I’d keep it. Because now I understand, it’s what would make them more human. More real.

Talking about the character fixes, Karan says he would give a spine and more emotional quotient to Rahul. He would also have introduced more confrontation.

Rahul, today, would be able to have an open conversation with Anjali. He’ll know that she likes him and he’d address that with her. If Tina were to die, he’d come to terms with his feelings for Anjali and go back to her, not sit moping.

Karan wrote the film when he was 24 and had no formal training or experience in filmmaking and he claims that his sensibilities have changed over time.
