Many Years On, Amit Trivedi’s Music From Dev.D Is Still As Trippy

When Anurag Kashyap announced his adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s famous novel, Devdas, the audience was quite apprehensive to watch yet another retelling of the story. After all, over the years, there have been 9 adaptations of the tragic romance in cinema including Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s lavishly-mounted Devdas (2002).

But with Anurag Kashyap at the helm of the project, Dev.D (2009) was something that we had never seen before.

The primary characters, Dev, Paro and Chanda were placed in contemporary times but the essence of their love story and struggle remained the same.

Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill and Kalki Koechlin were extraordinary in the film.

Kashyap’s nuanced storytelling made it a treat for film goers who had earlier seen Bhansali’s version of the story.

Dev.D brought music composer Amit Trivedi to the forefront and for that music lovers will always be thankful.

Every track of the film was carefully crafted to maintain the narrative and was completely in sync with the overall feel of the film. The lyrics, penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, Shellee, Anusha Mani, and Shruti Pathak, added to the sound that was quite revolutionary for Bollywood.

Trivedi even won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Dev.D.
