There’s nothing like a murder mystery to engage and deeply involve the audience. Even if they don’t like the film, the guessing game about the antagonist keeps the audience enthralled till the end. Interestingly, these movies were quite popular in Bollywood until a few years ago but we don’t see many films of this genre being made these days. 1. Talvar (2015)

This film was based on the much-hyped Aarushi Talwar murder case. The film told the story through various point of views leaving the audience to decide which version they believed the best. It was a unique film for Indian cinema as such Rashomon style story telling had never been attempted before.

2. Talaash: The Answer Lies Within (2012)

A well-known actor drives his car into the sea trying to avoid something mysterious. The actor dies and the mystery thickens. The reasons that crop up during the police investigation take Inspector Surjan (Aamir Khan) deeper into the case as he and his wife are also dealing with the loss of their son who died recently. Rosie (Kareena Kapoor) starts helping the inspector in solving the case and the events which then unfold are least expected.

3. Manorama Six Feet Under (2007)

Manorama (Sarika) is running to save her life and runs into Satyaveer (Abhay Deol) and urges him to remember her name and age. The next day’s paper carries the report that Manorama has committed suicide and Satyaveer takes it upon himself to investigate the case. His investigation leads him to find that there is a bigger racket in the small town and he has to uncover it.

4. Samay: When Time Strikes (2003)

A reputed business man is found dead and ACP Malvika Chauhan (Sushmita Sen) is assigned the case. The killer has left no evidence and before the murder is investigated further, another dead body is found. Malvika realizes that this is the work of a serial killer and she must find out the pattern of selecting the victims and the identity of the murderer before it’s too late.

5. The Stoneman Murders (2009)

This film is based on the real life Stoneman serial killings that made headlines in the early 1980s in Mumbai. Suspended sub-inspector Sanjay Shelar (Kay Kay Menon) hopes to track the murderer and sees the case as an opportunity to get his job back. The official police investigator of the case, Kedar Phadke (Arbaaz Khan) clashes incessantly with Sanjay as they delve deeper into the case.

6. Khamosh (1985)

A film unit enters enters Pahalgam in Kashmir to shoot their film and an actress from the unit mysteriously commits suicide. It looks like an open and shut case but as more details are found they realize that it could have been a murder. Before the killer is caught, more unit members are found dead. This one is a classic example of a whodunnit.

7. Gupt (1997)

Governor Sinha (Raj Babbar) is found murdered after a heated argument with his step-son, Sahil (Bobby Deol). Sahil is arrested for the murder but he constantly pleads that someone else has done the act. The film follows Sahil’s struggles to find the actual murderer and the result will surely leave you shocked when you watch the film for the first time.

8. 100 Days (1991)

Devi (Madhuri Dixit) sees visuals of things that are yet to happen. She gets a vision of her sister Rama (Moon Moon Sen) being murdered. She’s reported missing at the time but years later, Rama’s body is found in the wall of the house she was murdered in. The police along with Devi start investigating Rama’s death to find who killed her and why.

9. Dhund (1973)

The film is based on Agatha Christie’s play, The Unexpected Guest. Thakur Ranjit Singh (Danny Denzongpa) is murdered and his wife Rani (Zeenat Aman) reveals that she has killed her invalid husband to an unexpected guest. He believes that the the murder was in self defence and decides to help Rani out. The police start investigating the murder and new facts come to light that point that the murder has probably been committed by someone else.

10. Teesri Manzil (1966)

Sunita (Asha Parekh) wants to find Rocky who she believes is the cause of her sister’s suicide. Anil (Shammi Kapoor) meets Sunita but is not able to reveal that Rocky is his own stage name though he has no role in Roopa’s suicide. The police investigates and finds that the killing was actually a murder.

11. Ittefaq (1969)

Dilip Roy (Rajesh Khanna) storms out of his house after an argument with his wife and upon returning finds out that his wife is dead. He is arrested by the police as the prime suspect on the basis of the statement given by his wife’s sister, Rekha (Nanda) who lives with them. Dilip starts suspecting that someone else might be behind the killing and tries to find out the truth.
