If you love Sci-Fi movies, then, look no further because we’ve got here for you literally all the timeless sci-fi movies that Hollywood blessed us with. Scroll down to make your choice.

1. The Matrix (1999)

The Matrix is a perfect film, even if it were just a stand-alone. But, the fact that The Matrix didn’t only give us phenomenal use of CGI (one of the best ever), but also gave us a plot that was nothing like anything we’d seen before. It was certainly ahead of its time in terms of its concept. That machines could take over and leave humans helpless and the faith of the world rested on a chosen one gave; the movie went beyond the done-to-death plots of the time. It continues to outshine most sci-fi movies till date.

2. Independence Day (1996)

Independence Day basically gave to us alien invasion and how humans would emerge victorious; thereby, setting a benchmark in sci-fi that filmmakers to come would follow, exhaustively, and still fail. Independence Day gave us provocative thought material with a freedom movement between humans and aliens.

3. I, Robot (2004)

While robots have been – and continue to remain – a fascination in cinema, I, Robot gave us a robot that could feel, and make decisions based on human judgment. It scared us and intrigued us at the same time. It was the perfect new-age suspense thriller. It shows us how AI can prove to be a pro and a con at the same time. Add to that, Will Smith as a disgruntled detective and you’ve got yourself a classic; stat.

4. Inception (2010)

Nothing about this movie was boring or done before. Then again, when it’s Christopher Nolan, nothing seems to be a repeat of anything. The idea and concept behind this film is exceptionally brilliant. The genius of a dream within a dream and how one can manipulate people’s decisions through it is beyond any mind can take. And if that’s not what left us at the edge of our seats, it was the major cliff-hanger at the end of the movie where we were all left wondering whether or not Cobb makes his way back to reality or not. This movie is definitely a masterpiece that requires your full attention.

5. Blade Runner (1982)

This movie was so good they remade it with Harrison Ford and Ryan Reynolds. But, there’s something about a ‘first’ that a sequel can somehow, never carry forward. Set in a dystopian future LA, the movie explored the possibility of ‘synthetic’ humans, or replicants who are bio-engineered in an evil corporation. Ford plays a burnt-out cop who reluctantly hunts down a nunch of fugitive replicants. The story-telling was complex, no doubt. But the plot twists and the development is what makes it such a classic sci-fi even today.

6. The Terminator (1984)

No classic sci-fi movies’ list is ever complete without the Arnold Schwarzenegger cult movie, The Terminator. We have Arnie playing a robot travelling to the past to prevent a woman’s son from killing the machines in the future.Throughout the movie you can feel like you’re a part of the chase always at the edge of your seat hoping that the machine doesn’t get close enough! This was when Schwarzenegger really took Hollywood by storm and went from body builder, to actor.

7. Interstellar (2014)

Again, Christopher Nolan. This time, in tow with Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine creating ‘interstellar’ magic onscreen. This movie was so in-sync with the current mood of the planet; while even taking it up a notch. It didn’t just take us into space; but it also enlightened the audience about how time-space continuum works and how gravity… and love… are key to our survival – be it on this planet or not. The brilliance of this movie can only be put in so many words; Stephen Hawking would have been proud.

8. Gravity (2013)

Another space exploration movie; only this movie literally has you with your heart in your mouth the entire time. It’s like you’re in space for the entire duration of the film; space walking, observing the silence, feeling light and then spiraling out of control, into oblivion for eternity. It makes you fear what’s up there while at the same time be in awe of the experience. It was undoubtedly a cinematic feast!

9. E.T The Extra-Terrestrial

It was the film that made us fall in love with aliens; and, for once, it made us consider the fact that maybe extra terrestrial life was friendly, or neutral at the very least, instead of hostile. It was like the modern-day fairy tale where magic was from ‘out of this world’, in the literal sense. This film shows us a possibility that humans and aliens can both, actually co-exist. And it gave to us billions of E.T franchise!

11. Avatar (2009)

This movie broke records and created history while giving us a movie that was brilliant on all levels – storytelling, plot twists and character development. All in all, a beautiful film, even just to watch. The CGI was next level and so was the cinematography. It explores how an avatar can become a game changer for an entire community; but, more importantly, it explores a very relevant issue – that of encroaching on territory for corporate interests; only a lot more fantastical. What’s not to love?! We’re still waiting for the promised sequel!

12. The Fly (1986)

It’s the story of an eccentric scientist who’s ‘life-altering’ teleportation experiment goes horribly wrong when he accidentally and slowly begins to turn into a human-fly hybrid. From gaining abilities to crawl ceilings to losing his sanity while trying to carry on his existence through an off-spring, this is the perfectly gruesome sci-fi movie you don’t want to turn your eyes away from. It’s a must watch; especially with Jeff Goldblum playing the crazy scientist!

13. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Imagine if you died every time only to wake up and do it all over again. On a battlefield, with scary-looking aliens threatening to take over the world. What’s worse? The alpha can actually sense when you come back to life! From the lifelike visuals to the way the movie plays out, there’s never a dull moment. For once, Tom Cruise plays a general who cannot fight – on or off the battlefield. The film actually gives you a fresher take on alien invasion and how to do it over till you get it right and the plot brilliantly comes together in the end.

14. The Martian (2015)

We’re obsessed with space travel and life on other planets – both, on and off the screen right now. So when Hollywood adapted The Martian by Andy Weir; which in itself was a bestseller, cinema-goers and book-nerds were cued in to see how the movie would play out the book. And it did well to portray life on Mars; or the eventual absence of it. While not much space travel, since the plot centers around an astronaut being left behind on Mars to survive and die all by himself, the portrayal is as real as the actual imagery we’ve seen from NASA, as well as does fairly good justice to the book.

15. Ex Machina (2014)

This move is equal parts disturbing as it is intriguing. If you’ve watched till the end, you know what we mean. Again, it makes you question everything we know about AI while applauding the element of suspense and the plot twist. From the performances to the story line, this film is brilliant. And it’s the end that actually takes the cake!

16. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

While Star Wars, as a franchise remains a cult, even today (the latest trailer released last night), we can all agree that The Empire Strikes Back is the most phenomenal of the lot! From Darth Vader constantly trying to lure his son Luke Skywalker over to the dark side, to Luke actually crossing over to the dark side – something no one saw coming; given they were so used to the good over evil hullabaloo. Add to that the fact that the effects and the cinematography were way ahead of its time, back then!

17. Planet of the Apes (1968)

Before the new-age films was the OG Planet of The Apes which – for it’s time – was way ahead of the thought process, let alone the direction. Set in a realm where humans are the animals and apes are, well, the ones who run the world. It didn’t just give birth to a new wave of thought but also gave people a glimpse of turning tables; in black and white and still kicked ass!

18. Alien (1979)

No one would have ever been afraid of ‘aliens’ the way people would have been after this movie released. This film is a scary accomplished piece of entertainment. The story-line, the visual effects and the performances is simply brilliant. By the end, we’re both creeped out and freaked out at the same time. It was one of the first movies of its time that didn’t just play around with space exploration, but also brought to the mix a scary situation of alien infiltration and mutation.

19. Jurassic Park (1993)

This movie spiraled a thousand cinematic ideas and fantasies and yet, remains a classic; unparalleled even by the recent revivals. The script isn’t overhauled and the VFX effects used in making of this film looks damn realistic. It was our first initiation into what dinosaurs would be like if they walked the Earth amongst us; for both, good and bad.

20. Back to the Future (1985)

Time travel never looked so funny and cool at the same time; while equal parts clumsy. This was one of the first classic films that highlighted the concept of time travel. It was a futuristic film that boasted of a blockbuster script. It is an amazing film that all age groups thoroughly enjoyed watching, back at the time of its release and even today. Films that came after even tried incorporating elements from this original (remember Hot Tub Time Machine) and didn’t come close.

21. Back To The Future II (1989)

One of the few movies that followed through even in its second installment, adding more to the plot and proving that sequels can actually work; unlike most times. Just like its prequel, the script of this film was fast-paced and exciting; offering a newer element to the plot.

22. Back To The Future III (1990)

And third time lucky, too! Back To The Future is one of the few films that proved to work in all three installments; such was its cult following. This film was smartly written and directed; it maintained its concept of time travel at the crux of the film and kept it equally humorous. It is a sequel that is worth watching for the performances and its visual effects.

23. Annihilation (2018)

Natalie Portman is a phenomenal actor (Case in point: V For Vendetta and Black Swan) and with Annihilation, she takes on sci-fi with just as much finesse. Her character enters a quarantined zone after the disappearance and strange reappearance of her husband who seems different, coughs up blood and ends up on life support. The film follows Portman’s character trying to survive in the zone called The Shimmer. The film cleverly plays on human psychology and makes you question the entire plot – who’s whom and who’s lying in the first place. But, it’s the end that grips you and leaves you wondering what just happen.
